How we make your portrait

Three things from you, then it is ours. Here is the whole of it, and the one thing we need you to get right.

  1. PetGogh

    Choose your style

Royal, watercolour, PetGogh, seasonal — pick the style and theme that suits your pet, then the size and the frame.

  2. PetGogh

    Upload your photo

Pick one from your camera roll or your socials — close up, well lit, head on. We know you have hundreds of them.

    We take it from here

Your artwork is ready to preview in 12 hours. Approve it, or ask for changes — nothing is printed until you say yes.

What happens after you order

  1. An artist puts your portrait together

An artist puts your portrait together

Your photo goes to a designer who cuts your pet out, corrects it and places it into the artwork by hand, then finishes it with professional digital tools. It is never an automatic conversion. If the photo will not make a good portrait, we email you before any work starts, because we would rather ask than guess.

  2. You see it before anyone prints it

You see it before anyone prints it

Within 12 hours the finished artwork lands in your inbox. Approve it, or tell us what to change — the eyes, the coat, the background, where the name sits. We would far rather redraw it now than have you open a parcel you do not love.

Reply within 72 hours. If we do not hear from you we print it as it stands, so your order is not left sitting in the queue.

  3. We print it and check it

We print it and check it

Once you approve, your artwork is printed on gallery-quality stock and inspected before it is packed. Anything that comes out wrong is reprinted, not shipped.

  4. Packed, and on its way

    Packed, and on its way

Your portrait is packed to survive the courier and sent with tracking, 1-2 business days after you approve it. The tracking link reaches you by email the moment it leaves us.

Getting a good photo

Getting a good photo

You do not need a professional camera. A phone photo taken in daylight is usually perfect. What matters is this:

  • Get close. The more of your pet's face fills the frame, the more detail the artist has to work with.
  • Get down to their level. Crouch so the camera is at eye height. Photos taken from above flatten the face.
  • Sitting or standing beats lying down. We need the head, neck and chest.
  • Daylight, no filter. Outdoors on an overcast day is the easiest good light there is.
  • Keep the ears in the frame. They are the first thing people recognise.
  • Skip anything blurry. If it looks soft on your phone, it will look soft on your wall.

The one thing we need from you

We draw from the exact photo you upload, so the photo matters more than anything else you choose on this site. Check that the angle, the colouring and the coat are true to life before you order. If it will not make a good portrait, we will email you and ask for another before an artist starts.

Everything after that, you get a say in. You see the artwork before it is printed and you can ask for changes. And if something is still not right when the parcel arrives, our satisfaction guarantee covers you for 60 days — email info@petgoghstore.com and a real person will answer.

Still have questions?

A well lit, close up, head-on photo works best — ideally without a filter and in natural light. Show as much of the ears, head, neck and chest as possible so we can get a good crop of your pet's face.

Your artwork reaches you to approve within 12 hours, and once you approve it, it prints and ships within 1-2 business days. The courier then takes 3-5 business days inside the USA, 5-7 to Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, 5-10 across Europe and 10-15 to the remaining countries we ship to. Allow up to a week more in November and December. The estimate shown at checkout is the one to go by.

Reply to the approval email and tell us what is wrong. Our artist reworks it and sends it back to you. This is exactly what the approval step is for, and it costs you nothing — we would rather redraw it twice than print something you do not love.

Yes! Many of our portraits are available with one, two or three pets. For more than three, email info@petgoghstore.com and we will help.

Add Skip the Line when you order and your artwork moves to the front of the artists' queue, so the approval email reaches you sooner. Replying quickly is the other half — we cannot print until you approve. Neither changes how long the courier takes.
